A frustrating weekend for Dale Earnhardt Jr. ended with a mechanical issue early in Sunday's I Love New York 355 at Watkins Glen International.
Earnhardt struggled all weekend trying to find speed in his No. 88 Chevrolet and a problem with the valve train took him out of the race on lap 22. He started the day by qualifying 28th.
“Its been a really difficult week," Earnhardt Jr. said. "Weve been way down on speed. But, the guys worked really hard. We changed this car inside and out twice this weekend. And, we had made it better and we were kind of hanging in there. I think we had a shot at maybe a top 20 at best. But man, we showed up and we were about four seconds off."
After finishing sixth at Sonoma in June, Earnhardt will end his NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series road racing career with three top fives and six top 10s in 35 combined starts at Sonoma and Watkins Glen. Today's 37th-place finish came in his 17 start at the 2.45-mile New York road course.
"We had a pretty good car at Sonoma, so I was kind of looking forward to coming here," Earnhardt said. "Its been a little frustrating this weekend. I sure have enjoyed racing here and really appreciate the fans here; and the track and the staff. Theyve treated us so good every time weve been here, so its been a blessing.”
