Hamilton on top this weekend in Spain, leading both of the Fri. practice sessions. Ferrari was tough to beat in the Sat. morning free practice session but Hamilton returned to the front when it mattered most, winning his 3rd pole of the season.
Lewis Hamilton said, “The fans here are amazing every year and I feel like I’ve really been grown a lot in Spain in the last ten years so I really appreciate all of the support I get here, Amazing job by the team and super proud we can get back up there and have a better weekend. The 1st lap of Q3 was really good, the last one was so-so.”Sebastian Vettel came in 2nd place, just 0.051 seconds behind Hamilton’s Mercedes, but things could have been a lot worse for the German. Discovering a water leak in the Ferrari power unit, his team performed a engine change in record time but, however Vettel suddenly slowed and was advised to pull over and retire from the session. Fortunately, Vettel questioned the decision and was given instructions on how to restart the system which allowed him to recover from the potentially championship ruining situation. “I’m afraid it was, yes,” said Vettel when asked whether a small lockup at the final chicane was the difference between pole and second. “I’ve been coming here a long time, have done so many laps and still the last chicane was a tricky one for me! Big thank you to the team because we had to change the engine at the last minute. Today’s really for the mechanics, also from Kimi’s Raikkonen car who helped out. They did an engine change in sub two hours.”
