2017-07-08 Sparta, KY Martin Truex Jr Wins NASCAR Cup Series Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway.

Martin Truex Jr won stage 1 but Kyle Larson started last and raced his way all the way to 3rd place.

Larson, Truex and Kyle Busch among others took 4 new tires to start stage 2. Kyle Larson was penalized for speeding on Pit Road so even though he was in third-place entering the pits he will once again start in last place.

At the start of stage 2 in turn three Brad Keselowski got loose on the inside and bumped Clint Bowyer, both spun out and Kozlowski bumped the wall however at the same time Jimmy Johnson got clipped in the left front end sending him high into the wall pretty hard and broke his right front suspension. Keselowski and Johnson’s cars were seriously damaged and they could not return to the race, no one was injured in the incident.

Moments later at lap 94 in turn four Trevor Bayne was spun out by Kasey Kahne who wound up hitting the wall hard on his right rear. Kahne’s car was too damaged to return to the race however Trevor Bayne was able to continue racing.

Trevor Bayne cause the fifth caution of the night when he spun out and turn 4 on lap 112. The damage ended his night early.

By lap 123 Kyle Larson had passed an impressive 57 cars for position.

The sixth caution was caused by Joey Gase. Something broke in his steering and he was not able to turn so he drove straight into the wall damaging the right front of his car, the damage was to severe and he was not able to return to the race. He was not injured in the accident.

With 20 laps to go in stage 2 a caution gave the opportunity to pit to Kurt Busch Denny Hamlin Ryan Blaney Dale Earnhardt jr. among others to take four new tires. Martin Truex Jr won stage 2.

To begin the final stage with four new tires and fuel was had by Martin Truex Jr, Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth. Denny Hamlin took only two tires but won the race off pit road moving him from 7th to 3rd and Stenhouse took only two tires moving him from 13th to 4th Suarez took two tires and he went from 14th to 6rd and Menard with his two new tires went from 17th to 7th Martin Truex Jr Wound up fifth after leaving Pit Road to start the final stage. Logano and Blaney did not pit to so they started first and second with Hamlin and the rest following behind.

By lap 172 Truex had made it back to first place. With 35 labs to go Martin Truex Jr was a whopping 11.19 seconds ahead of second-place commanded by Kyle Busch and 13.53 seconds ahead of Kyle Larson who miraculously made again from last to 3rd place.

With two laps to go Kyle Larson was in second however he was still 16.166 seconds behind the leader Martin Truex Jr. just then the eighth caution of the night was caused when Kurt Busch blew something in the engine and smoked the race track. During the caution Kyle Larson snatched up two new tires, Kyle Busch grabbed four new tires and the race went into overtime.

Martin Truex Jr maintain the lead on the restart and made it past the overtime line just then a ninth caution came out, however it did not affect him winning his third NASCAR Cup Series race this season. Truex said a good push from Kyle Larson at the final restart helped him a bunch.
