Pierre Gasly will miss the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix to compete in the final round of the Japanese Super Formula.
The Frenchman has made two starts for Scuderia Toro Rosso but is second in the Super Formula championship standings and just a half point behind front-runner Hiroaki Ishiura.
As speculation of Carlos Sainz Jr.’s early switch to Renault began to grow, Gasly found himself taking center stage as the man to replace Sainz. The story took a surprise twist when Daniil Kvyat was ousted to make room for Gasly and has become even more complicated now that Sainz has finally moved over to Renault.
Honda, Toro Rosso’s engine supplier for 2018 and the manufacturer running Gasly in Super Formula, had said that its priority was to keep the Frenchman in his F1 seat for Austin so that he could continue to gain experience for a full-time drive next season. Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost has a different agenda, however, seeing the United States Grand Prix as an opportunity to provide an opportunity to a yet unknown driver.
Gasly was only guaranteed to take part in the Malaysian and Japanese rounds of the Formula 1 world championship, but he currently looks to be the clear favorite to race in 2018. Who will join him is the real question, with Kvyat having already been promoted to Red Bull, only to be quickly replaced by Max Verstappen. There is even speculation that Robert Kubica or even Mercedes academy product Pascal Wehrlein could get looks.
