2017-11-12 Robert Hight NHRA Funny Car driver, president of John Force Racing and sponsored by AAA Auto Club of Southern California won his 2nd NHRA Funny Car World Championship.
Hight last won the championship in 2009. This Pomona California event was a struggle for Hight, qualifying 15th of 16 was the least of his worries when he had a major engine explosion, in the semi finals and then crashed into the catch fence. Hight was not injured in the crash nevertheless it was the Round 1 loss of Ron Capps to Del Worsham that allow Robert Hight to come from behind to win the 2017 NHRA Funny Car World Championship in Pomona California.
“I knew this Auto Club team was just an adjustment away,” Hight said.
“Everybody worked their tail off and was quiet and knew they had a job to do,” Hight said. “This is just huge for John Force Racing. For a couple of years, we have struggled but it is such a great group. We signed a long-term deal with Auto Club and they deserve better than what we were giving them. Jimmy Prock, Chris Cunningham (co-crew chief) they got us back in the game. It’s been a long time and you want it so bad.”
